“Everyone likes a complement.” (Abraham Lincoln)
The best way to let a legislator know how you feel about an issue is to send a message. Legislators hear from their constituents every day. Many messages express personal thoughts and voting recommendations.
Everyone likes to know that what they are doing is making a difference, especially legislators who are representing us at a State and national level. A quick note of thanks acknowledges the efforts of the legislator and the ‘behind the scenes’ actions.
A letter of gratitude should be brief and include three points:
- Reference the bill/bills you are discussing by number. e.g. HB___, SB___
- Thank the legislator for what they did: Did they: Stand up for an issue at a hearing, support legislation or vote on a bill.
- Personalize your letter. Include a statement about how their action impacts you and your family.
Note: One – two sentences for each point is sufficient.
As we work on legislation across the nation, acknowledging the efforts of our State and national representatives is an integral part of the process. For more information on how to locate your legislator and writing tips go to: Writing to your Legislators : 5 Easy Steps
